Klara Vajda was born in Hungary and lived in Israel and Brazil before moving to the United States in 1982, to Andover with her husband and three young daughters. She has a degree as a system analyst from the University of Budapest and was a manager at a computer company in Hungary; when she arrived in Andover she cleaned homes and catered parties for many years. She graduated as a paralegal from Northern Essex Community College at the age of 62 and subsequently worked at a family law firm.
Klara worked at Saint Augustine's Parish in Andover as director and coordinator of ministries and later as outreach coordinator. She "retired" at the age of 74. Now Klara is a Court Appointed Special Advocate in the juvenile court, a member of Saint Vincent De Paul Society serving the poor in Andover, and on the board of Communities Together of the Merrimack Valley. She also continues visiting the homebound parishioners of St. Augustine Church and for the past 25 years has run a divorce and separated support group. |

You will be able to see and talk with our honorees to offer your congratulations!!! What is the Citizens Who Care-Educator of the Year Event? Citizens Who Care (CWC) is Andover's longest running program that honors outstanding community volunteers. Since 1996, the Rotary Club of Andover has honored people each year who have contributed to the local community through their extraordinary volunteer contributions. Those chosen exemplify what it means to be an "unsung hero." They come in all ages and professions. The Educator of the Year (EOY) started in 2009 and honors one exceptional educator chosen by his or her peers. The Student of the Year recognition honors a student who has been a leader in service to others. The recognition of the recipients will be embodied within an exhibit of video portraits and biographies that will be aired on Andover TV throughout the coming months. The Citizens Who Care - Educator of the Year Gala 2020 was impacted by the COVID-19 Global Pandemics. Typically, each spring there is a large gala that draws town leaders, elected state officials, Rotarians, past recipients and friends and families of the recipients. This event was originally scheduled for May of 2020 but had to be postponed. Because of our current environment, we have opted to have a virtual gala on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 to honor the 2020 participants. The Citizens Who Care - Educator of the Year 2021 is slated to happen in the Fall of 2021. At this point it is unclear if the event will happen in person or virtually. How were the recipients chosen? In January of 2020 the Rotary committee sent out nomination forms to a large list of organizations and individuals. The committee chose 7 final recipients from the dozens of nominees for the Citizens Who Care Awards. The Educator of the Year and Student of the Year were nominated by teachers, school administrators and/or parents and chosen by the committee. In addition, this year for the first time the Rotary Club is presenting two special Lifetime Achievement Awards. What makes the CWC-EOY Gala special? The CWC-EOY gala is the Andover Rotary Club's signature event and fundraiser. The 2020 Gala will be held virtually on March 3, 2021 at 6:30 pm. In addition to the families and friends of the honorees and Rotary Club members and supporters, the event draws our Select Board, town manager, state senators, state representatives and many of the town's volunteer organizations. It is the only such event that draws so many groups that shape Andover's future. Your sponsorship of the CWC-EOY program is "good for all concerned." We keep the ticket prices affordable to the families and friends of each year's recipients, and a sponsorship helps to cover these costs, along with supporting the club’s service projects and charitable causes that make a difference in our communities and world. These initiatives include our contribution to end Polio across the globe, the anti-bullying program in selected Andover schools, Thanksgiving turkey dinner collections, holiday toy drives, medical missions abroad, international student exchange programs, our clean water project building wells to supply drinking water for a village in Kenya, and our support of many local charities. There truly is no other event that draws such a diverse and community-minded group of people to which you have a chance to make a statement of your company's good citizenship. With the shifts in the CWC-EOY Gala, your sponsorship will be for both the 2020 and 2021 events. The attached sheet shows the levels of support and the details for the 2020 virtual celebration. Information on the 2021 event will be sent out at a later date. |
