Andover Public Schools Superintendent

Dr. Magda Parvey began her tenure as superintendent of the Andover Public Schools in July 2021.
Most recently, Dr. Parvey was the Chief Academic Officer for Middletown Public Schools in Middletown, Connecticut. In this role, Dr. Parvey oversaw all instructional programs and was charged with developing robust short- and long-range goals for Middletown’s Strategic Operating Plan. This position was seen as an integral part of the district’s effort to provide all students with rigorous learning experiences and prepare them to thrive as critical thinkers and problem solvers who are college and/or career ready. Her depth of experience and knowledge in curriculum design, instructional leadership and supervision were crucial components to the district’s strategic plan. Prior to her appointment in Middletown, Dr. Parvey helmed the City School District of New Rochelle as Interim Superintendent, leading Westchester County’s second-largest school system through a time of great transition. A wise and effective decision maker with a strong belief in leading by forming relationships, she provided a sense of calm and stability to the District of 11,000 students. In New Rochelle, she promoted a rigorous curriculum, with a focus on offering access to opportunities for all students. With the faculty, she focused on professional learning, and promoted a culture of learning and collaboration. Her approach was to listen well and to engage her fellow administrators, teachers and others in pursuing the District’s mission. As a lifelong educator, Dr. Parvey has held multiple leadership positions during her over 25 years of experience in school systems in Connecticut, North Carolina and New York. She is a graduate of Canisius College from which she holds a Bachelor of Arts. Dr. Parvey holds a Master of Science degree in elementary education and a Master of Arts in educational leadership and technology, both from Adelphi University; and a Doctor of Education in administration and supervision from Fordham University. |

Temple Emanuel - Andover

Rabbi Max Chaiken has served as the Rabbi of Temple Emanuel in Andover since July 2021. He was ordained at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) in Los Angeles in 2018, and subsequently served Congregation Kol Ami in West Hollywood, California. A native of Teaneck, New Jersey, Rabbi Chaiken earned his Bachelors’ Degree in Economics and Public Policy from Brown University, and before beginning his rabbinical training, he taught Jewish music, Hebrew, and more in synagogue religious schools and Jewish day schools here in the Boston area. His rabbinic thesis, “Telling a New Story: A Model for Economic Ethics in Jewish Law” combined his undergraduate academic interests with his passion for Jewish thought and philosophy. Rabbi Chaiken is an author and a composer of music, and he has published several articles and songs. In 2020, he was the featured author for the Union for Reform Judaism’s Ten Minutes of Torah Commentary on the book of Deuteronomy. Rabbi Chaiken lives in Andover with his husband, Rabbi Danny Shapiro, and their dog, Oogie. |

Town of Andover Master Planning Update

Lisa is the Assistant Planning Director and has worked for the Town of Andover since 2001. She has served on the Board of the Merrimack Valley affiliate of Habitat for Humanity and Boston Children’s Hospital CSG. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and the American Planning Association. Lisa also served in the Peace Corps in Ghana, West Africa as an education and environmental volunteer.
Lisa is a graduate of Clemson University College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities and the University of Pennsylvania’s Stuart Weitzman School of Design. She currently lives in Newburyport with her family.

ECCF's NextGen Initiative

NextGen is an initiative of ECCF, representing a growing number of Millennial and GenX change-makers in Essex County who are passionate about community, impact and giving back. Our work is intended for rising generations and those that have been excluded out of the traditional “philanthropic” frameworks. Our goal is to empower changemakers here in our own community(ies) to become part of systemic solutions. This work is about authentically opening the table to make change together through our many currencies: • Money • Connections • Skills • Knowledge Recognizing the importance of instilling these values into future generations, the NextGen committee piloted a Youth Philanthropy initiative in Spring 2021, creating opportunities for NextGen’ers to participate in meaningful service projects with their children. As they prepare to roll out more such opportunities in Fall 2021, NextGen is going to come talk to our club about their initial successes and how Rotarians can participate going forward.
Kathryn Price, co-chair, ECCF NextGen Youth Philanthropy Committee: curiouskidslynnfield@gmail.com Bio: https://curiouskidslynnfield.com/bio/ Kathryn has been in Early Childhood Education for 20 years, teaching Preschool, First Grade, and Math Intervention in both public and private school settings. In 2015, Kathryn opened Curious Kids Lynnfield in order to focus on the aspects of teaching she likes best: connecting with small groups of students, helping early educators with curriculum development, and guiding the experiential learning of children through rich hands-on learning experiences. Through Curious Kids, Kathryn offers onsite STEM workshops at preschools and local elementary and private schools and also works with school administrators to offer Professional Development in the area of STEM Education in Early Childhood. She also presents this material at regional and national conferences on the topic. Kathryn is also a professor of Early Childhood Education at Salem State University, focus on STEM Education Methods in Early Childhood, and supervises Graduate students and pre-service Teachers during their practical classroom experiences for the School of Education. In her spare time, Kathryn in running all the World Marathon Majors in memory of her uncle and serves on various local community boards in Lynnfield. She is a mom of a 12- and 9-year-old and an unruly puppy named Moose. In addition, I also manage ECCF’s NextGen Philanthropy Initiative, which I established in 2014. My role here really gives me the opportunity to make authentic connections with those working in the community, collaborate and to step back and get a bird’s eye view of the impact we are all making together. It’s also given me the chance to see the ingenuity, intellect and perseverance of the human spirit in the face of challenge. I have more than 23 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. Prior to joining ECCF in 2011, I was the Program Manager at Philanthropy Massachusetts (formerly AGM) in Boston. Before that, I was an Executive Director, Gallery Director and Director of Development for several arts and cultural organizations. Today, I also serve on the boards of the Hamilton Wenham Ed Fund and the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association. I find inspiration in nature, my family and friends, and making authentic connections. I think that’s why I actually loved my two-year stint as a taxi driver way back when. It was the best way to meet people. When I’m not working, I love to play tennis, golf, spend time with my kids and be creative. One day, I hope to sell my own art at a gallery, along with many other things like seeing the Northern Lights, taking a National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) course, finishing the Boston Marathon and hiking to the basin of the Grand Canyon.

Mike Benjamin, originally from Somerville MA. Enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served 4 years on active duty and another in the Marine reserves. Mike is a veteran of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He moved to Andover in the summer of 2014 and his two daughters attended High Plain, Wood Hill and AHS. Mike is currently a member of the American Legion Post 8 (Andover) and is the Head of IT for Hopper (Online Travel) |

NEADS - Service Dogs for Veteran's - Virtual Meeting

Katie is an Army veteran, recently retired from the U.S. Army Reserves after 23 years of total service, including 11 years of Active Duty. She completed her Army career as a Lieutenant Colonel and Operations Officer with the US Army Surgeon General, Reserve Affairs Directorate. Prior to coming to NEADS, Katie was the Area Census Office Manager for the Worcester Office managing over 1,500 field staff, supervisors and managers responsible for completing the 2020 Census. Katie has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Management and Leadership. She is the point person for veteran clients, provides outreach to the veteran community, and services to civilian clients. Her passion is supporting veterans in living their lives to the fullest in response to service to our country. She is active in the community and serves as the President of the University of Iowa ROTC alumni association providing support to Army ROTC cadets and alumni. |

Merrimack Valley Regional Transportation Authority

Noah Berger is the Administrator and CEO of the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority (MVRTA), which is the local transit provider serving sixteen cities and towns across the Merrimack Valley, including Andover. MVRTA carries over two million riders per year on its family of local and intercity bus routes, commuter routes, employment routes, demand-response van runs, and even a seasonal beach run! Since his appointment to the position by the MVRTA Board in July of 2021, Noah has been riding the buses and reaching out to key stakeholders, of which the Andover Rotary Club is of course the most important example! MVRTA is currently embarking on several exciting initiatives to increase access and opportunity across the region, including going-fare free this coming March, adding bus stops, rebranding the look and feel of its vehicles and spaces, optimizing routes, and introducing dynamic scheduling to its van service. Noah is an almost thirty-year veteran of public transportation. He has previously held leadership positions with the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority, Connecticut Transit, the Greater Hartford Transit District, the Federal Transit Administration, the Boston Foundation, the MBTA Advisory Board, Cambridge Systematics, the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity, as well as Boston’s Parker Shelter, Vermont Congressman Bernie Sanders, and the New York Yankees. He is an exhibited oil painter, and has served on the boards for ARTmorpheus in Boston and the New Art Center in Newton, MA. He is the author of By Bus, Bike or Boat: A Rider’s Guide to Public Transit in Greater Burlington and Vermont, and “The Guardian of the Birds” in John Abarno’s The Ethics of Homelessness: Philosophical Perspectives, and has Master’s Degrees in City Planning from M.I.T., and Philosophy from the State University of New York. |

Laptops for Learning

Jeff Williams is the founder of TEK Collaborative. Operating from their office in Amesbury, MA, TEK Collaborative provides refurbished laptops and Chromebooks to people in need throughout Essex county. Jeff began this initiative in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic when he watched his daughter's classmates and teachers struggle with remote learning due to a lack of access to reliable internet enabled devices. Jeff started by distributing a few devices of his own that he had gathered over his many years working in IT. It quickly became apparent that there was a much greater need than was first realized. Jeff launched a GoFundMe campaign called "Laptops for Learning" and over about an eight month period raised about $12,000. Every dollar that was collected was used to acquire devices that could be distributed to anyone in need. In 2021 a partnership with the Essex County Community Foundation was formed and TEK Collaborative was born. The "TEK" in TEK Collaborative stands for Technology, Education, and Kindness which are the principles that brought forth this initiative. Together with the ECCF, TEK Collaborative has distributed over 1000 laptops and Chromebooks to individuals and organizations throughout Essex County as part of the ECCF Digital Equity initiative. Devices are provided free of charge, and when coupled with the many free internet hotspots being rolled out, the mission of closing the digital divide can become a reality. Jeff lives in Amesbury, MA. He is married to Elizabeth Hockmeyer-Williams, together they have one daughter, Eleanor (13), and 5 dogs. |

Voices of Hope

Greg founded Voices of Hope in 2009 after the loss of his mother to Pancreatic Cancer. It was supposed to be a one night show to give back to the cancer community who worked so hard to save his mothers life. But that one night led to understanding how he and his friends could help in this fight as so many people are effected by this disease. Now eleven years later and with over 15 performances, VOH has grown from 22 members to over 200 volunteers who have donated hundreds of hours and have donated close to $900,000 to cancer research. For the past 9 years VOH has partnered directly with the Termeer Center for Targeted Therapies at the MGH Cancer Center and are currently the second largest donor to the center. Greg chose this method of fund raising as he has always been a performer since his mom took him to his first audition in high school and has been doing theater ever since. Prior to VOH Greg worked in the financial/investment world for over 30 years in New York and Boston as well as at the North Shore Music Theater in Beverly. Greg’s wife Jean and daughter Gabriela have been integral partners in this journey and he could not have made this switch to fund raising without their support. Ironstone Farm New Executive Director

Kerri Whalen is the new Executive Director of Challenge Unlimited/Ironstone Farm; an Andover equine therapy farm that provides therapeutic, educational, and recreational opportunities using the resources of the farm and its environment to help all involved experience joy and enhanced quality of life. Ironstone farm serves over 500 individuals and families each month and provides services for people with disabilities and their families, Veterans, individuals suffering from mental health and PTSD, cancer patients and survivors and trauma victims. Kerri is excited to be reaching out to key stakeholders and the Andover Rotary Club to share the amazing stories of the people and families whose lives have been changed through the love and connection they have received at the farm. Ironstone Farm is launching new programs and initiatives to increase the numbers of individuals we can support and serve, and our Vet Retreat house is almost complete. It is an exciting time for Ironstone Farm! Kerri credits her love for the non-profit sector from her years as an Americorps Volunteer working with low-income families. This experience gave Kerri a deep appreciation for how nonprofits seek to improve the quality of life for the people and communities they serve; one program at a time. Kerri’s experience encompasses work as a clinician, Program Director and later Development Director with more than fifteen years of experience in grant development, corporate giving, individual fundraising, and project management. Kerri later served as Deputy Executive Director where she led teams to deliver outstanding client and stakeholder experiences and identified best practices on internal systems with an eye on the long-term vision of the organization. Kerri says “I am thrilled and honored to join the team at Ironstone; it is truly a special place. The horses and the environment at the farm are giving individuals and families hope, happiness and connection and it is life changing to witness and be a part of.” Kerri is thrilled to have the opportunity to connect with the community of Andover to build strong partnerships that create lasting community change. On the weekends you will find Kerri spending time with her husband and two teenaged children outdoors on the hiking and cross-country ski trails or building Legos with her nephews. |
