Rotarians Serve Those Who Serve - Merrimack Valley Gas Emergency

Thursday, September 13, 2018, the Merrimack Valley was rocked by unprecedented gas explosions that caused over 40 fires in Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover. Crews from all over New England were joined by crews from as far away as the Midwest to secure and safeguard lives, homes, and businesses. Our hearts go out to the young man who died during the emergency, and the many people who lost homes and businesses.

“The power of Rotary is in the Foundation's ability to pull help from around the world while local clubs provide immediate relief in their own communities,” says Don Mebus of the Rotary Club of Arlington, Texas. If you have questions about how you can help, contact relief@rotary.org.

Andover Cares rocks for a second great year

cwalsh@andovertownsman.com

ANDOVER – Last year, this community saw a total of 11 fatal drug overdoses, part of the opiate crisis rampant in the region.

It was 11 deaths too many for the Rotary Club and concerned townspeople. As Board of Selectmen Paul Salafia put it, it spurred residents and officials to say: “No more.”

Thanks to combined efforts of Andover’s community, this year’s overdoses are down significantly - only three this year, according to Salafia.

“The town really stepped up,” he said, praising the efforts of allparties in town combined, as a community. “The numbers are down because the town addressed it. You can’t say, ‘Not here.’ It is here, it can happen anywhere.”

On Saturday, a couple hundred from the community came together throughout the bright day to celebrate the annual Andover Cares Festival at the Doherty Fields and Cormier Youth Center in Andover.

Andover Rotary Club launchedthe Andover Cares movement in 2015 in response to the recordbreaking number of heroin-related deaths and incidents that hit the community in 2014 and 2015. The movement’s goal: to break the stigma, and provide resources to those affected by addition.

Andover Townsman Features Andover Cares Festival

Andover Native Carissa Johnson Rocking It With Care
By Judy Wakefield jwakefield@andovertownsman.com

Sharing her bass guitar playing and singing songs that she has written in front of a hometown audience has been on this young performer's bucket list for awhile.

Carissa Johnson, 22, of Andover, can now cross it off the list as she is set to perform at the Andover Cares Festival on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Doherty Middle School fields and Cormier Youth Center on Whittier Court, Andover.

"I think it's a great cause to help - unfortunately it's an issue that needs a lot of attention," said Johnson, who graduated from Andover High School in 2012.

Johnson has grown up on Andover's teen music scene as she was once active with West Middle School's guitar club. Her teen band from Andover - Left Hand Blue - appeared on the television show Community Auditions in 2011. Their first self-titled album had just been released and was produced, recorded and mixed at a North Reading studio.

The album's all-ages launch party was held at a Plaistow, N.H., cafe while the band's music was played on small radio stations including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's radio station. The band also played at Andover Community Skate Park and other Andover Youth Services events.

2016 Andover Cares Festival

The Andover Cares Festival returns Saturday, September 17, 2016.

For more information, visit the new Andover Cares website, www.andovercares.org!

The Rotary Club of Andover’s Andover Cares Festival returns for a second year Saturday, September 17, 2016, 3:00pm to 9:00pm, at the Doherty Fields and Cormier Youth Center, Whittier Court, Andover.

The Festival will also feature talks and discussion forums by experts in the opiate addiction field. Plus there will be lots of entertainment for the kids and plenty of food and beverages to make the festival a day for the entire family. One way Andover Cares raises funds is through donations of $20 toward an Andover Cares button. Kids under the age of 18 can contribute $10 for a button. By purchasing a button and wearing it throughout the year, supporters will spread the word about Andover Cares. Buttons can be purchased in advance here.

GREAT EDITORIAL IN THE ANDOVER TOWNSMAN!

Written by Club member Al Ruthazer sharing the good news about the work the Town of Andover, Rotary Club of Andover, Andover Cares, Merrimack Valley Prevention and Substance Abuse Project, and so many others are doing to address substance abuse and opioid addiction.

Editor, Townsman:
I want to thank Bridget Healey for her Aug. 11 letter to the editor "Fight addiction with 'inclusion.'" In her letter, Ms Healey shared the wisdom that people who are addicted to opioids and other controlled substances are ill and need help.

I’d like to share some “good news” that many people in our community are taking action, and it’s making a difference.

Rotary works to eradicate polio world-wide

Rotary International released an additional $34.8 million in grants to support polio immunization activities in 10 countries, including Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, the three countries where the disease has never been stopped.

The funds, whose release was announced 20 January, will be used by the World Health Organization and UNICEF for polio immunization and surveillance activities in the 10 countries, as well as to provide technical assistance in several other countries in Africa.

The grants include $8.1 million for Nigeria to support its final push to eradicate the disease. Nigeria experienced a nearly 90 percent reduction in cases in 2014 compared with the previous year, and hasn't registered a new case of polio in the last six months.

"Nigeria has managed an incredible feat," says Dr. Tunji Funsho, Rotary's PolioPlus chair for Nigeria. "However, now we must be more vigilant than ever, as our progress is fragile."

Rotary Responds

Rescue missions and emergency aid continue to arrive in Nepal after a massive earthquake hit the country on 25 April, killing at least 4,000 people and injuring thousands more. The 7.8-magnitude quake, the worst to hit Nepal in more than 80 years, has affected 8 million people in the country's 39 districts, including 1.4 million needing food assistance, according to government officials.
"Rotarians worldwide stand together in expressing a profound sadness at the devastation resulting from this weekend's deadly earthquake in Nepal," says RI President Gary C.K. Huang. "As we mourn the thousands of lives lost, Rotary joins other international agencies in providing immediate relief to survivors and mobilizing our expertise to support long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts throughout the country."
Rotary District 3292 in Nepal set up a disaster relief fund to help victims in the hardest hit areas. Immediate funds will go towards food, water, medical supplies, and shelter. For information on how you can help, .
Rotary partner is sending a response team to the affected areas to determine immediate needs. Because of previous disasters in Nepal, the group already has tents and other nonfood items ready for deployment.

Polar Plunge Update!

UPDATE ON 2015 POLAR PLUNGE

After a winter of epic proportions delayed the plunge three times, Rotary District 7930’s Polar Plunge took place April 11th 2015 at Long Beach in Gloucester adjacent Cape Ann Motor Inn.  To raise awareness and critically-needed funds to fight the crippling disease polio, members of the Rotary Club of Andover plunged into the icy waters off of Gloucester as part of the Rotary District 7930’s 5th Annual Polar Plunge. The effort benefited The Rotary Foundation, the volunteer fundraising arm of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative - a public-private partnership that also includes the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This year’s effort raised over $104,000 and will be matched 2:1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. At just 60 cents per vaccine, the effort will pay for over a half million polio vaccines.

For the Rotary Club of Andover and the students of the Margaret Okari Children’s Foundation in Kisii Kenya, that phrase means hope. This Friday, November 7, Kwamboka Okari will visit the Andover Rotary Club to share with us the results of that hope. The Andover Rotary Club is working with other Rotary clubs – local and far away – to provide clean drinking water for the Margaret Okari school and the village of Kisii, Kenya.

Saturday, November 8, The Margaret Okari Children’s Foundation will host a fundraiser, When the Moon Shines in Andover, the Sun Shines in Africa, at the Log Cabin on the campus of Phillips Academy, Andover. For information about the event, please contact the Andover Rotary Club through facebook and we’ll put you in touch with Peg Campbell, local representative.

Every year since 1982, 3rd/5th graders from Andover public, parochial and home schools have journeyed to the Andover Historical Society to learn first hand about life in the 1820s. Each year  about 600 students break into small groups to  actively work their way through the Amos Blanchard’s; kitchen, grinding spices; barn, collecting eggs; special store, trading for candy;  special print shop. They also temporarily join the “fire fighting society “ and  practice using a plastic bucket that represents the original 194 year old fire bucket now in the Society’s collection.

Andover Rotarians support Andover Fund for Education while improving their Spelling skills.

It took a lot of courage for seven Andover Rotarians to show up at the March 23rd Annual Spelling Bee to support the Andover Fund for Education. The fund was founded in 1991 to enrich and support Andover Public Schools.

Even with a real dummy helping the 'Dummies' team of Mark Spencer, Howard Perkins and Al Getler and a world class speller named Jillian Gelter, the team couldn't overcome other teams that could spell in Round One.

Hopes for victory relied upon Rotary Team 2 in Round 2- 'Russell's, Ringers' with Paul Russell, Jan McClure Brown, Chuck Humphrey and Ken Fey. It didn't go as planned, but Fun was had by everyone.

See you next year!

The sixty members of the Rotary Interact Club of Andover High School spent the first weeks of November organizing the contribution of 300 coats and blankets to Lazarus House in Lawrence. Not an obvious choice with all the other activities in which teenagers can invest their time and energy. The Rotary Club of Andover sponsors the AHS INTERACT Club.

“It’s terrible to be cold” commented Ali the Club President, “and a lot of people do have old coats

they can contribute.”.  The AHS Club is one of 10,900 INTERACT Clubs in 109 countries with over 200,000 young people ages 12-18 as members.

Amy LaMarche, the Rotary Club of Andover Advisor to AHS INTERACT, was proud of the community service spirit displayed by the INTERACT Club members. Amy commented that each year the Club must complete at least two community service projects that help develop leadership skills and personal integrity, while demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others.

On November 16, Lazarus House Community Development Director Dennis McCarthy thanked the teens for their individual and club efforts in an outstanding community service project at Andover High School.

I was especially glad that our attendance was 8 greater than last year

Megan already sent out her thanks so I don't need to repeat the kudos--except to thank Megan for making last night go without a hitch. A lot of details go into an event like this and Megan got them all right.

The mission of Rotary is why I belong to this great organization.  From the 4-way test we recite each week, to the countless lives that have been impacted by Rotary’s programs, to the sense of giving back to man-kind, I embrace this mission and want it to live on.

Being surrounded by others who have this shared feeling is awesome.  These fellow Rotarians, whether in my town or on the other side of the globe, are connected to me by Rotary’s cause and our shared values

Dear Rotarian,

What an amazing few weeks it has been for this club. The momentum has been incredible and out event last week was first class. If you don’t know what I am talking about, well you missed out on a historic time for this club.

We are back to our regular meeting schedule tomorrow. Please note, however, that there is no meeting next Friday due to the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

In addition to our speaker tomorrow, we will induct two new members and talk about our fall event, the Rotary Club of Andover’s Comedy Night.

This week’s speaker is Brad Howell of Career Resources Corp in Haverhill. Career Resources is an organization that works with and supports people with disabilities. They provide a wealth of support from housing to training and employment. What they do for the community and those they touch is truly amazing.

Couple of things to observe for the Friday the 13th meeting:
1) Do not walk under the ladder propped by the door at the entrance of the Lanam Club.
2) Don’t stop and talk to anyone calling himself Jason and wearing a hockey mask.
3) If you have garlic now may be a good time to throw some over your shoulder OR string it and wear it around your neck
4) Avoid stepping on cracks in the sidewalk.
5) Bring at least $13 for fines and happy dollars.
Just a few helpful hints for a safe Friday the 13th.

Individual Rotary clubs belong to Rotary International. Individual members, or Rotarians, belong to a club. The club is where most of Rotarians' meaningful service work is carried out. Clubs can be engaged not only in their communities, but also internationally. What Rotarians get out of Rotary depends largely on what they put into it ...

Today’s speaker, Andrea Stoll, who is the President (and El Jefe) of SnapInfusion, talked about the candy business which she and her husband Eric are starting up. She said that the creative idea of Snap Infusion is combining health and confection, a kind of Nike meets Willy Wonka. Their firstproduct is SuperCandy fortified with B vitamins. It uses evaporated sugar cane and turns sugarinto energy. They use patented “flavorbeads.” As their website - http://www.eatplaysnap.com/- says, SNAP contains natural flavors, colors and ingredients, such as tapiocasyrup, evaporated cane juice and palm kernel oil.

Andrea pointed out the opportunity in the candy business. Candy is the 4th largest market infood products with $30 billion worth sold per year. Snap makes a jellybean, a gum, a chocolate covered caramel, a tart, and a gummy. Itis now being sold in health clubs and bookstores.

Annual Comedy NIght Returns on October 11th

Posted by Al Getler

Image

“The two previous annual Comedy nights in 2011 and 2012 sold out because the four comedians were outstanding” commented Bob Lavoie, President of the Rotary Club of Andover, “This year's night promises to be even better. It’s a fun venue for couples or a group of neighbors, friends or co-workers."

This year’s Rotary Comedy Night will be at the Wyndam Hotel on Friday October 11, starting at 7pm. The event is an annual fund raiser for the Rotary Club of Andover’ community grants program.

Dave Rattigan will host the hilarity that also features Tony V, Kelly MacFarland and Steve Macone.  Rattigan commented, “This is a perfect show for this crowd, because the comedians are all smart and original and very funny. There are plenty of comedians with one or two of those qualities, but very few who provide all three. It’s one of my favorite shows of the year, because the crowds are great, everybody has fun, and we raise a lot of money that Rotary will use to support a variety of important community organizations and causes. To me, that's the best show to do."

Tickets are $25per person and available at www.rotaryandover.com. There will be a cash bar and finger foods provided.

Comedian Bios

Tony V. is a premier comedian and actor who appeared in the 2013 Sandra Bullock comedy The Heat. He also appeared in the 2012 films The Love Guru and God Bless America, as well as the web series Boston Taps. He hosts the WEEI Whiney Awards, and headlines the Wang Center as part of Boston's First Night celebration, his long list of industry credits includes Showtime’s Brotherhood, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Seinfeld, Comedy Central, HBO, A&E, MTV, etc.

Animated, clever, and full of sass, Kelly MacFarland captivates audiences with her charm, and sends them into hysterics with her unique point of view and surprising candor. Along with performing standup in clubs, at colleges and at theaters, she has been featured on Comedy Central's Premium Blend, the TV Guide Channel’s Stand Up in Stilettos. She has been the opening act for Melissa Etheridge and LeAnn Rimes at both the Cape Cod Melody Tent and South Shore Music Circus,

Steve Macone writes for the satirical website The Onion, and is a headlining comedian at colleges around the East Coast. He’s been a finalist in the standup contest at the Boston Comedy Festival, created the theme-standup show “Smart-ernative,” and had cartoons published in The New Yorker. He’s also performed on Comedy Central and at the prestigious “Comics Come Home” concert.

Dave Rattigan, who returns as host, has had comedy clips featured on Nickmom.com and ULive.com in 2013, and re-released his CD Dave Rattigan: Thinks He’s Funny, which has received airplay on Sirius-XM Satellite Radio, the short-lived Boston “Matty’s Comedy 1200,” and other radio stations and podcasts. Always busy as a comedian, writer and producer, recent projects include writing and producing funny webisodes from the Post Office Golf League series, and co-creating a themed standup show called How Men Think (Or Do They?).

The Rotary Club of Andover celebrated its 15th annual Citizens Who Care and fourth annual Educator of the Year awards on May 10 at 6 p.m. at the Wyndham Andover Hotel off River Road.

Lane Glenn, the new president of Northern Essex Community College, was the speaker.

The Citizens Who Care award honors those who have made extraordinary contributions to the Andover community, above and beyond their normal job descriptions. The Educator of the Year is given to one teacher, principal or support person in the Andover public school system who exemplifies these same caring qualities, in and out of the classroom.

“These exceptional people live, work, or volunteer in the Andovers, and have helped make life in the Merrimack Valley better for all. They are selected as the town’s true unsung heroes,” according to Rotary member Mark Spencer.

Since its founding 1996 the Citizens Who Care (and now Educator of the Year) recognition has been embodied in a display of portraits and biographies that circulates several town buildings, including Town Offices, Memorial Hall Library, Brickstone Square and town banks.

Join us on October 12, 2012 in the ballroom at the Wyndham Hotel, Andover, and be rocked with the laughter as the Rotary Club of Andover holds its Second Annual Comedy Night.

The evening will feature four well-known area comedians (Dave Rattigan, Jim Colliton, Stephen Bjork, and Steve Calechman) and will once again be hosted by Dave Rattigan, who also produces the show under his Scamp Comedy company.

Last year, when the laughter finally died away, the Club had raised more than $7,500, to help fund its many community service projects throughout the Merrimack Valley, including a digital white board to be used in the Andover school system, scholarships for Andover residents, support for local non-profit charities and a Rotary exchange student program that this year includes sending an Andover student to Denmark and hosting a student from France.

"The evening was a terrific success —for attendees, and for Andover Rotary and its many projects!" Club President Al Getler said about the 2011 event. "People have already asked the date for next year’s event and I am happy to say we are already planning with the comedians and the Wyndham Hotel.”

So the plans are set for 2012. Mark your calendar, buy your tickets and join us on October 12, 2012!
